"Conscious Choice" - A Film Review

Prelude :: I am also tempted to title this posting as "Trying to be different"......!!

Well, Let me justify both the titles before you move off from this posting...

Dear All

I happened to see latest Simbhu's film "Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya".....yesterday. A poetic title, isn't it ??

I had never seen a film acted by Simbhu Or directed by Goutham Menon....and but for my sweet little daughter's insistence I would not have ventured this. I sincerely look forward - while going to even a trash movie - to make it an experience and try to adapt myself as much as possible with the Director's mind set and the mood of the audience when I go to big screen.

I don't intend to narrate the story line of the movie - even in the briefest form before giving my feedback about the movie as I am bit hesitant that it may make this posting bit longer !! I am also telling myself not to utter any filthy word or sprinkle the exact emotion that I felt (yeah, its none other than "rage") during most of the scenes.....because.....after all I don't want you to go away from this posting just because of my silly words. (people around me say I have a tongue that is too powerful.....). Let Baba be with me for next half hour or so !!!

I can empathize with those directors who clearly brand themselves for C class audience - who are so clear in their "vision" about their would be movies (3 fights, 1 car chase AND 5 songs - one seductive included - ). Its ok to digest them as they have a market to be taken care - the huge mass of people who are not so educated AND who look upon this habit of film watching to "relax" themselves. I really don't feel so bad about the quality of majority of the films made in Tamil because it is too big and complex problem as there are justifications hovering around it.

When the director's name of this film (prefer not to quote it once again !!) was widely spelt about for his extra ordinary (?) earlier films, I did took notice of the name. Some how this gentleman's appearance over TV clippings - particularly his eyes and the way he spoke - did not arouse any great curiously within myself to know him better. Now, I know a little bit after seeing his latest block buster.

He belongs to a really concerning category of film makers who consider themselves very intelligent. I could see a nauseating wish of this gentleman through out the film to think "differently". Examples are aplenty if I start quoting scene wise.... He did not want the lovers to get united in the last scene because it will become "another" love story. The sensible (and "sensual" too)heroin - just in case - decides to respect her parents and if they change their minds to unite these two lovers, it will start resembling another super hit movie. Both of them dying in the last scene pushes the story line to Eighties.....!!! Bechara...How can an intellectual take a movie that resembles any other movie ?? The Director along with his band of assistants (Peace be upon them !!!!) wishes to make a very different and complex structure of thinking processes within the heroin and in a typical style she does some thing in the climax and moves away from hero "showing him her back"....!!

These days the word "chemistry" is uttered in film world (some times in TV dance shows too !!) too many times. Gentle Man Director !!! if in a train journey - - with no body around in II A/C Compartment - if a young healthy girl is made sit very close to a young man who is known to her and to whom she has not developed any aversion - automatically "biology" takes over. Tell me honestly, where did you get the idea of a "chemistry" of love in your very imaginative mind ?

And our wonderful hero, Simbhu as his father affectionately calls him (I wish he remained a child artiste until today.....Hmmmm !!!) is so clear that he is in love with her from the first sight and uses his eyes, voice modulations, pronunciation of words and body language very clearly to show his carnival desires, is under an illusion through out the film that he is in love with her !! How much of justification built up to show us that he is in true love......!! After two, three long (!!) years, he declines an offer of love from a pretty girl who works along with him telling that he is in love with some body else still.....after the breaking of love....!! Sabaash.....!!

The Director seems to be crystal clear that he is an intellectual and I am finding this sincere belief really concerning....as he has such a powerful technology (and powerful people to support his financing of such extravagant experiments !!) to support him.....!! I can empathise with the young girls sitting in groups to watch the movie getting carried away with the elegance of the beautiful heroine and start
getting into an imaginary world of nonsense !! I was also told that the climax was short thrice and being screened in varied manner in different theatre. I was blessed to see the climax where Thrisha supports the little star to complete the film and walks away stating that she lied to him that she was not married......and she was actually married (scintillating twists and turns !!! I re-learnt transaction analysis from this director).....!! She contributes to a great movie.....and the hero also expresses an optimism that he will unveil a mystery of how he got her phone number in his next movie.....!! So "Kalaippani" will not come to an end...for the Hero as well as our Director.....!! Tamil Nadu's fate....and unfortunately India (If I remember right) is the largest producer of mica, the raw material for making film roles....!!

This creed of directors are making a conscious choice of exploiting the young generation of this country with technology.....and unfortunately they are successful. Let me utter the Director's name just once more unable to hold my feelings....Mr.Menon, you are trying to be very different.....but you are NOT....!! Get this straight....and I wish some sanity prevails before you start musing about your next "Project"......!!!

Few words to Chimbhu..... (I prefer to call the hero with some "chellam" as I see him as a over-grown boy...nothing more). Dear Kanna, you have still a long way to go and it is unfortunate that you got no one around you to point out how immatured you are.....and how silly your thoughts are.
(I am happy that Nayan walked away from him.....Wish she finds some one who is really matured and sensible)
You have started thinking yourself in the range of oscars .. please believe this common man who is posting this musings......YOU ARE just a half baked youth. I wish and pray you learn about yourself and your capabilities before you have wrinkles on your smart (??) face.

Thanks to all for patient reading. I don't really curse myself for having seen this film.....in fact a heartful thanks to Almighty who gave this chance to see the pulse of today's successful films......!! Its really alarming AND I wish some Baba magic happens to this country.....!!

Krishnaarpanam as always....

Suren

  1. When Gayathri said that she did not like the film, I told her that it is the sign of her having passed to the next older generation. Looks that description fits you as well. hahaha... :) Dont you know that this movie is a 'hit' and everyone is appreciating Simbhu for his wonderful acting in the movie ??

Well, from what you and Gayathri have said - I have no doubt that this movie is a big "bachwaas"!!! Thanks to God, for not providing me with any opportunity to see this movie !!
